In a bid to streamline ticketing operations and facilitate digital payments, Kolkata Metro Railway is set to implement a Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-based ticketing system for its Green Line corridor, connecting the city with Howrah railway station. The decision comes in response to the recurrent challenge of providing exact change at ticket counters, prompting the introduction of a digital payment mode for commuters. The initiative is expected to enhance convenience and efficiency for passengers traveling along this route.

According to an official statement, the UPI-based ticketing system will eliminate the need for commuters to tender exact fare in currency notes and coins at Metro ticket counters. Collaborating with the State Bank of India and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), Kolkata Metro authorities are spearheading the implementation of this digital payment mechanism. The General Manager of Metro Railway recently conducted a trial of the new system at Sealdah station of the East-West Metro, paving the way for its eventual rollout across the Green Line corridor.

Upon successful completion of the trial phase, commuters will be able to scan QR codes displayed at ticket counters, make payments via smartphones, and receive QR Code-based paper tickets for seamless travel. Furthermore, plans are underway to extend this facility to other Metro corridors in Kolkata, including the Dakshineswar-New Garia, Ruby-New Garia, and Joka-Taratala stretches, upon successful implementation on the Green Line.
